Role Overview
The Lighting Engineer is responsible for designing and drafting lighting plots, installing and programming lighting systems for both integration projects and live events, and executing on-site lighting for productions. This role also includes maintaining lighting inventory and equipment, collaborating with management on innovative ideas and fixture selections, and ensuring all systems meet performance and safety standards.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Maintain the overall health, organization, and quality standards of the lighting department.
Collaborate with internal teams—including sales, project management, and senior leadership—to support customer needs through meetings, demonstrations, quoting, revisions, and follow-ups.
Interpret client objectives and translate them into lighting designs and plots using Vectorworks.
Create detailed stage plots for live events and permanent installations.
Provide input and consultation on lighting equipment for rental inventory, integration projects, and permanent installations.
Travel regularly to job sites to lead and support on-site lighting production.
Oversee and execute all aspects of on-site lighting setup, including: Rigging pipes, truss, and lighting trees; Fixture addressing and configuration; Running DMX and power cabling; Programming and operating lighting consoles
Perform lighting equipment diagnostics and basic repairs when not on-site, ensuring gear is maintained and show-ready.
Prepare and organize outgoing lighting orders and inspect returning gear for functionality and cleanliness.
Participate in client presentations and demonstrations as needed.
Follow and help improve evolving internal processes and standards.
Meet deadlines and deliver work that aligns with client expectations and production timelines.
Maintain a positive, team-oriented attitude in fast-paced and changing environments.
Skills / Qualifications
Familiar with lighting consoles and fixtures (e.g., GrandMA, ETC, Astera, ARRI, etc.), fixture addressing, and troubleshooting in live settings.
Deep understanding of live event workflows and on-site execution, including rigging, power distribution, and DMX/data management.
Experienced in leading on-site crews and working collaboratively as part of a larger production team.
Broad understanding of industry disciplines, including audio, lighting, video, rigging, scenic design, scenic automation, engineering, and labor coordination.
Proficient in Vectorworks for creating and interpreting lighting plots, ground plans, and technical drawings.
Ability to sketch concepts by hand to communicate design ideas or requirements.
Capable of reading and understanding contract scopes and terms & conditions.
Quick-thinking, creative problem solver with the ability to adapt on the fly in fast-paced, high-pressure show environments.
Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to manage multiple projects under tight deadlines.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills with a professional and collaborative demeanor.
Proven project management abilities with strong attention to detail.
Effective leadership skills and the ability to work collaboratively within a team.
Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, Google Workspace, and basic data entry.
Skilled in conflict resolution and team communication.
Willing and available to work non-traditional hours, including early mornings, late nights, weekends, and travel for show runs and load-ins.
